LI banking community mixed on Obama plan

Long Island bankers welcomed the support and said the federal government could help them help the economy. It was smart of Obama to identify larger banks as the ones that need more oversight and to spare smaller banks from further regulation, said Sangeeta Kishore, chief financial officer of Hanover Community Bank in Garden City Park.

The Nassau County Coalition Against Domestic Violence announced that its annual spring gala, held at The Carltun in East Meadow, raised nearly $200,000 and was attended by a record 300-plus guests.
“We are quite pleased with the results,” Sandy Oliva, executive director of the Hempstead-based organization, which first held the gala in 1992, said in a statement. “Domestic violence continues to plague Long Island families. It’s vital that we continue to reach out to the community to help keep the residents of Nassau County safe.”
The gala honored James Jacovatos, president and chief executive of Hanover Community Bank in Garden City Park, and his wife, Imelda, along with Stephen W. Schlissel, a matrimonial attorney who is a partner at Schlissel, Ostrow, Karabatos in Garden City.

Community bank boom
Description: Bigger is definitely not better right now in the banking business. We’re seeing commercial banks buried under a mountain of debt and needing the government to save them from themselves.
But for some smaller, community-based banks… business is booming.
They may not have the name recognition but some start-up banks say they can provide service that’s just as good as the larger chains and they say their customer’s money is just as safe. Source: CNN.com

It's a Great Time to Start a Bank

In late January, as U.S. bank stocks tanked on nationalization fears, tiny Hanover Community Bank on Long Island opened for business.
The Garden City Park, N.Y., bank was swamped with customers, and a push to lure $20 million in cash by selling certificates of deposit attracted $43 million. As investors fled the stock market, some brought Hanover as much as $1 million at a time according to bank officials.
